New Direction Trust Company: Precious Metals IRA Fees and Depositories
New Direction Trust Company (NDTCO) is a Louisville, Colorado self-directed IRA custodian. Its fee schedule effective November 15, 2024 lists a $220 annual precious metals fee and a $130 processing fee, with depository storage billed separately. NDTCO's pages we reviewed name no depositories and do not state its regulator.
This page collects what New Direction Trust Company publishes about holding gold and silver in an IRA. It is a fact profile, not a rating or a recommendation. Every statement about the company is the company's own claim unless we say another source confirms it. For how custodians fit into the bigger picture, see our Gold IRA Custodian Directory. Facts below were checked on October 13, 2026. Fees and policies change, so confirm them with the company before you act.
Who is New Direction Trust Company?
New Direction Trust Company, which goes by NDTCO, describes itself as a self-directed IRA custodian. According to its website, it is "based in Louisville, CO" and serves clients nationwide, and it has been "dedicated to helping thousands of investors" since 2003. The site says NDTCO performs "the duties of a directed (passive) custodian."
A September 26, 2018 article from the American Association of Private Lenders says New Direction Trust Company was formed by New Direction IRA, Inc. and would replace that firm and Mainstar Trust as custodian effective October 18, 2018. The article's own wording calls it "a Kansas-regulated trust company based in Overland Park, Kansas." The company's president is quoted about the trust charter only: "We obtained this trust charter not to alter how we do business." The article is eight years old, and we have not confirmed it with a regulator (see below).
On its About Us page, NDTCO says it "does not sponsor, endorse or sell any investment" and is not affiliated with any investment sponsor, issuer or dealer. That is the company's statement about itself.
Is NDTCO on the IRS list of approved nonbank trustees?
We could not find it on that list. Here is what we checked.
Federal rules say an IRA trustee must be a bank or another person the IRS has approved. A company that is not a bank applies in writing to the IRS, and it may not accept IRA accounts until it has been approved (26 CFR 1.408-2). The IRS publishes a list of approved nonbank trustees and custodians. The page was last reviewed June 28, 2026, and links to the list dated April 1, 2026.
We searched that April 1, 2026 list for "New Direction," "NDTCO" and similar names. We found no entry. The list is a snapshot as of that date. We also found no statement on NDTCO's pages explaining how it qualifies as an IRA trustee.
What this does and does not mean:
- It does not tell us whether NDTCO is properly qualified. A company could be qualified some other way, for example as a bank under the federal definition, or under a different name.
- We make no legal conclusion either way.
- Because this matters for metals, ask the company directly. The IRS says the bullion exception to the collectibles rule applies only "if a bank or approved non-bank trustee keeps physical possession of it" (IRS).
Our custodian requirements guide explains the bank and nonbank rules in more detail.
Who regulates NDTCO?
NDTCO's home page and About Us page, as we read them, do not state a charter or a state regulator. The only statement we found is the trade article's own description of the company as "Kansas-regulated" (September 26, 2018), noted above.
We tried to confirm this with the Kansas Office of the State Bank Commissioner, which says it regulates state-chartered banks and trust companies. The pages we opened did not list individual trust companies, and we did not run its company lookup. So we cannot confirm the charter or its current status. You can ask NDTCO for its charter and regulator, then check with that agency yourself.
What does NDTCO charge for a precious metals IRA?
The most recent fee schedule we could open is NDTCO's Fee Schedule V.101524. It says its changes "will go into effect November 15, 2024." NDTCO's fees page did not show amounts or a version in the text we could read, so we cannot say whether this schedule is still current. The table lists only the lines we could read clearly.
| Fee (precious metals) | Previous amount | Amount in V.101524 |
|---|---|---|
| Annual administration | $185 | $220 |
| Processing | $95 | $130 |
| Depository storage | Not in this schedule | Set by the depository and billed to the account |
The schedule says storage fees are not included. Other charges, such as wire fees, shipping and special services, appear elsewhere in the schedule. The text we could read did not let us match every amount to its label, so we leave them out. Ask for the full current schedule in writing.
NDTCO's help center adds that a purchase involves a transaction fee and an outgoing wire fee. A sale involves a transaction fee and shipping and handling. If you use a different depository, an annual storage fee may apply, and storage at a depository may rise with the value of the metals (NDTCO help center). For how these charges compare in general, see Gold IRA custodian fees.
Which depositories does NDTCO support?
We could not find a list. NDTCO's precious metals page, help center and metals instructions refer to "a depository" or "your chosen depository" and do not name one. We do not know which depositories it works with, whether storage is segregated or pooled, or what each charges.
What NDTCO does say is that metals must be stored at a third-party depository, and that home storage is not an option. At distribution, it says you can take metals in kind or receive cash.
What do you buy, and who checks it?
NDTCO says its accounts can hold gold, silver, platinum and palladium. It lists minimum purity of 99.5% for gold, 99.9% for silver and 99.95% for platinum and palladium, and says gold American Eagle coins are allowed. On its precious metals page, NDTCO says gold American Eagles do not meet the 99.5% purity minimum but are allowed. Those figures are the company's description; for the federal rules, see the IRS page above.
NDTCO says you choose the metals and negotiate the price with a dealer of your choice. Its help center says it needs an invoice naming your IRA as the buyer and your depository as the ship-to address. It also says it is "unable to recommend, endorse, or promote a dealer or asset provider" and that account holders are responsible for their own decisions and due diligence.
That matches how a directed custodian works. It processes your instructions and holds records. It does not vet the dealer, judge the price or promise the metals are a good purchase. See custodian, dealer and depository roles.
What questions should you ask NDTCO?
- Are you an IRS-approved nonbank trustee, or do you qualify another way? Which IRS notice or document shows it?
- What is your charter, and which agency supervises you?
- What is your current full fee schedule and its effective date? Are there fees for wires, shipping, sales, closing or transfers out?
- Which depositories can I use? Is storage segregated or pooled? What does each charge?
- Who has physical possession of my metals, and how do I get proof?
- How long do purchases, sales and transfers take?
- How do I get a copy of the custodial agreement?
How does this compare with other custodians?
We have profiles of Madison Trust Company and Midland Trust Company, written the same way. A profile is not a ranking. Use the same questions with every custodian you consider, and talk with a qualified tax or financial professional about decisions that depend on your situation.
What we did not check
We did not review lawsuits, complaints or regulatory actions involving NDTCO. Absence from this page is not a statement that none exist. We could not open the company's older website at newdirectionira.com. This profile will be updated when we verify more.
