Gold IRA Minimum Investment Requirements

Updated October 6, 2026Facts checked against sources on October 6, 2026

The short answer

There is no single Gold IRA minimum. In the IRS pages we reviewed, we found no minimum purchase amount; minimums are set by each company. Three companies we checked publish figures from $5,000 to $25,000, stated in different ways. Fixed annual fees take a larger share of a smaller account.

Many people ask how much money they need to open a Gold IRA. The honest answer is that it depends on the company you use, and the number is not set by tax law. This page explains where minimums come from, shows what three companies say on their own websites, and works through simple arithmetic on how fixed fees affect a small account. For the wider picture, see Gold IRA fees and costs. This is general education, not advice.

Does the IRS set a minimum to open a Gold IRA?

In the IRS pages we read, we did not find one. Publication 590-A, the IRS guide to IRA contributions, describes maximum contribution limits. When we checked it, we found no minimum amount to open or contribute to an IRA. The IRS page on collectibles in IRAs covers bullion. It allows "gold, silver, platinum, or palladium bullion of a certain fineness if a bank or approved non-bank trustee keeps physical possession of it." It names no minimum quantity or dollar amount.

Our reading: the minimums you see in ads and sales calls are business policies, not IRS rules. Absence from a page is not proof, so if a company says a minimum is legally required, ask it to name the rule in writing. A tax professional can also tell you whether any rule applies to your situation.

Who sets the minimum, and why?

Three businesses can be involved in a Gold IRA:

  • The dealer sells the metal.
  • The custodian is the bank or approved trustee that holds the IRA. Publication 590-A says: "The trustee or custodian must be a bank, a federally insured credit union, a savings and loan association, or an entity approved by the IRS to act as trustee or custodian."
  • The depository is the vault that stores the metal.

Any of them may set a minimum order, a minimum balance or a minimum fee. Companies give their own reasons. Goldco, for example, writes: "Because we don't want our customers to have to pay high fee percentages, we generally require a minimum of $25,000 to start a gold IRA." We treat that as the company's explanation, not an independent finding.

What minimums do companies publish?

The table lists three companies in alphabetical order. It is not a ranking and does not suggest any company is better or worse. Each figure is the company's own statement, and the wording differs, so the numbers are not like-for-like. Minimums change, so check the company's current page.

Three things to notice:

  • A minimum order is not a minimum balance. American Hartford Gold describes an order size. Birch and Goldco describe what it takes to open or start an account (Goldco adds "generally").
  • Words like "generally" are soft. Ask whether a stated number is a hard rule or a guideline, and whether exceptions exist.
  • The minimum is not the whole cost. It tells you how much to bring, not what you will pay each year.

How do fixed annual fees affect a small account?

Many IRA fees are flat dollar amounts. A flat fee takes a bigger percentage of a small balance than a large one. The examples below use fees we read on company pages. The percentages are our own arithmetic. They are illustrations, not quotes, and not predictions of what you would pay.

Example 1: Birch Gold Group's stated typical annual cost. Birch's fees page says "the annual cost of a Gold IRA for most Birch Gold Group customers is around $235" (about $125 maintenance plus about $110 storage and insurance, in its words). Setup of about $50 is separate.

Example 2: Vantage IRAs' published schedule. Vantage says the record-keeping fee is "$325 annually." Storage is "20 basis points of your total account value" for "a minimum of $150." A basis point is one hundredth of one percent, so 20 basis points is 0.20%. At these balances 0.20% comes to less than $150, so we use the $150 minimum. Vantage also lists a $50 setup fee, left out here. Vantage says storage is charged "based on your depository renewal date," so timing may differ from a simple yearly figure.

Account valueBirch: $235 as % of balanceVantage: $325 + $150 = $475 as % of balance
$5,0004.70%9.50%
$10,0002.35%4.75%
$25,0000.94%1.90%

Calculation: annual fees divided by account value. For example, $235 ÷ $5,000 = 4.7%, and $475 ÷ $25,000 = 1.9%.

What this shows, and what it does not:

  • Fixed fees fall as a share of the balance when the balance rises. That is the main reason companies give for having minimums.
  • The table leaves out the dealer's markup, the gap between buy and sell prices, shipping and any sale or termination fees. Our pages on dealer premiums and markups and buyback costs cover those.
  • Each company's fee schedule has other terms we did not check, such as waivers. Birch, for example, says it pays first-year fees on transfers over $50,000.
  • Fees are one factor. They say nothing about whether a Gold IRA suits anyone.

What should you ask before opening with a small amount?

Questions to put to any company, ideally answered in writing:

  1. Is your minimum a minimum order, a minimum account balance or a recommendation?
  2. What are the custodian's setup and annual fees, and what are the depository's storage fees, including any minimum fee?
  3. What is the all-in dollar cost in the first year and in later years at my balance?
  4. What would I receive if I sold back the metal tomorrow?
  5. What fees apply if I leave or close the account?

See hidden Gold IRA fees for where these charges tend to sit, and total cost of ownership for how they add up over time. Our pages on custodian fees and storage fees explain two of the largest recurring items.

Common mistakes with minimums

  • Treating the minimum as a recommended amount. A minimum is the least a company will accept. It says nothing about what is appropriate for you.
  • Comparing numbers that measure different things. An order size, an opening balance and a "generally required" amount are not the same.
  • Looking only at the minimum. A low minimum with a high fixed fee can cost more, as a share of the account, than a higher minimum with lower fees.
  • Relying on an old page. Company figures change. Note the date you checked.

Questions about your own savings and tax situation belong with a qualified financial or tax professional.
