Gold IRA Custodian Fees: Setup, Annual, Transaction and Closing Fees

Updated October 6, 2026Facts checked against sources on October 6, 2026

The short answer

Custodians may charge a setup fee, an annual administration fee, fees on purchases, sales and shipments, and a closing or transfer-out fee. Annual fees may be flat or based on account value. Amounts vary by provider and change, so get the current fee schedule in writing and convert it to dollars per year.

A custodian is the bank or approved trustee that holds your IRA and keeps its records. In a precious-metals IRA it also processes purchases, sales and shipments. Its fees are one part of the total cost in Gold IRA Fees and Costs. This page explains the categories, the two main ways annual fees are built, and what to ask for. It is not a price list. Amounts differ by provider and change over time, so we do not publish an "average" or "typical" fee. We found no regulator source that gives one.

What do Gold IRA custodians charge?

Regulators describe the categories only in general terms. The SEC, NASAA and FINRA say "In addition to transaction fees, there may be account opening fees, annual account fees, administrative fees and asset specific fees in the account" and "Fees for self-directed IRAs may be significantly higher than those for other types of investment accounts" (Investor.gov). FINRA and the CFTC also say IRA custodians charge for their services, and that self-directed IRA fees are typically higher than fees on directed IRAs (FINRA; CFTC).

A custodian is not a vetting service. Investor.gov says self-directed IRA custodians "DO NOT evaluate the quality or legitimacy of any investment in the self-directed IRA or its promoters" (Investor.gov). Your fee pays for administration, not for a check on the dealer or the product. See how custodians, dealers and depositories fit together and Gold IRA custodians.

Are custodian fees flat or based on account value?

Two structures appear in the schedules we read, and the numbers are not directly comparable until you convert them to dollars for your own account.

  • Flat fee: the same dollar amount no matter how much metal you hold.
  • Value-based (scaled) fee: a percentage of the account or metal value, sometimes with a minimum, and sometimes with lower rates on higher slices of value.
FlatValue-based
Small accountCan be a large share of the accountCan be small in dollars, unless a minimum applies
Large accountCan be a small shareGrows with the account
Key questionIs it the same every year?Which value is used, and when is it measured?

Neither is better in general. Which costs less depends on your account size and how long you hold. For the same comparison applied to the whole account, see Gold IRA Fees and Costs.

What do published fee schedules look like?

To show that structures differ, here are three fee schedules that custodians publish on their own websites, read on 2026-10-06. We chose them only because their schedules were public and readable. They are not a sample of the market, and the order carries no meaning. They are not recommendations, and the figures may have changed since we read them.

A basis point is one hundredth of one percent, so 20 basis points is 0.20%. Each provider bundles services differently. One lists storage on the custodian's own schedule, another calls its annual charge a record-keeping fee, and another uses tiers. Each says fees can change: STRATA says its fees "are subject to change without notice." Whether a line in one column covers the same service as a line in another is something only each provider can confirm. Don't add up one column and compare it to another. Ask each provider for a dollar total for your own planned account, for several years.

How are custodian fees paid and how do they affect taxes?

Some fees are taken from the cash in the IRA. For example, American Estate & Trust's schedule says "Storage fees will be collected from funds held in the account." Others may be billed to you. Providers differ, so ask which is which.

On the tax side, the IRS says "Trustees' administrative fees that are billed separately and paid in connection with your traditional IRA aren't deductible as IRA contributions" and that you cannot deduct them as an itemized deduction either (IRS Publication 590-A (2025)). That passage addresses traditional IRAs. We did not locate IRS language in Publication 590-A on how fees paid from inside the IRA are treated. A tax professional can tell you how any of this applies to your account.

How do I find out what my custodian will really charge?

  1. Ask for the current fee schedule in writing. The CFTC says "Ask for all fees, costs, commissions, and agreed retail price in writing BEFORE signing a sales agreement or turning over any money" and "If fees are not available in writing before your purchase, that is a red flag" (CFTC).
  2. Ask what is not on the schedule. One schedule we read says the company reserves the right to charge for services not listed (STRATA). We read that from the STRATA page, not as a general rule.
  3. Ask whether fees are prorated. STRATA states its fees are "not prorated." That matters if you open or close mid-year.
  4. Ask who bills storage. The depository, the custodian or the dealer might. See Gold IRA storage fees.
  5. Ask about leaving. A closing or transfer-out fee can apply when you move to another custodian; see changing custodians.
  6. Ask whether any fee is waived and for how long. A waiver may apply to one fee or one period. See hidden Gold IRA fees.

Custodian charges are only one layer. The dealer's price also includes a premium and a buyback gap; see dealer premiums, markups and spreads. To total everything for your own account, use the planned Gold IRA fee calculator.

What are common mistakes with custodian fees?

  • Comparing one fee in isolation. A low setup fee can sit beside a high annual or transaction fee.
  • Ignoring minimums. A percentage fee with a minimum can act like a flat fee on a small account.
  • Assuming a fee schedule is permanent. Providers say fees can change, so recheck before each year.
  • Paying for storage you can't confirm. FINRA and the CFTC warn "Some fraudulent dealers have charged storage and insurance fees for metal that never existed" (FINRA). Ask where your metal is held and how to confirm it.
  • Treating fees as the only test. A custodian's fee does not tell you whether a dealer or investment is sound. See how to verify a dealer.
