Dealer Quote Analyzer: Premium Over Spot and Over Bid
Type in a dealer's quote and the spot price you see. The tool shows, step by step, how far the quoted price is above the value of the metal and what the whole purchase costs.
Enter the weight, a fineness of 1 or less, the spot price and the quoted price to see the arithmetic.
How this calculator works
Pure metal in one item is its weight times its fineness. Melt value is that pure weight times the spot price you enter. Premium over melt value is the quoted price minus the melt value. Fees you enter are added to the total.
Spot price is the market price for one troy ounce of the metal. FINRA's investor bulletin describes a purchase price as the spot price plus the dealer's markup, or premium, and says dealers sell above spot and buy back below it; the gap between those prices is the dealer's spread. It suggests asking for all fees, costs and the agreed price in writing.
This tool does not judge a quote. It does not say a quote is good or bad and does not recommend any dealer. It only does the arithmetic so you can compare written quotes on the same terms.
